Maffei1 (on the right of the image) and Maffei 2 (towards the left) are two members of the Maffei Group of galaxies. Both galaxies lie near the galactic equator and hence their light is heavily reddened by interstellar dust and gas. The Maffei Group may once have been a member of the Local Group of galaxies, but has possibly been ejected from the Local Group by a close encounter with the Andromeda Galaxy.
