IMAGE MOSAICS : Data Fusion
This view of the Aurora Borealis combines three datasets from two satellite systems. The background image of the Arctic region is a darkened version of our Satellite Imagemap of the World. Overlaid are two layers of information from a US military weather satellite taken at night: one is a worldwide image mosaic showing permanent light sources such as cities and oilfields (coloured yellow); the other is a mosaic of two images that captured a spectacular auroral event around the North magnetic pole (green).
