UK texture map (4113)
Our Satellite Imagemap of the British Isles is based on the best images from the MODIS instrument on NASA's Terra satellite, received and processed at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), and mosaiced by Planetary Visions.
Covering the UK and the Republic of Ireland, as well as the Channel Islands, Orkney and Shetland, this imagemap gives a moderate-resolution overview of the British Isles, enhanced by hill-shading based on digital terrain data. With natural colour optimised separately for land and sea, the MODIS imagery is detailed enough to show shipping in the English Channel and North Sea.
Coverage: 13 degrees West - 5 degrees East, 49 - 61 degrees North
Pixel size: approx 250 metres (8 arc seconds), 500 metres (16 arcsec), or 1km (32 arcsec)
Enhanced by hill shading and a coastline mask, our 250 metre Satellite Imagemap of the UK is suitable for a range of computer graphics, GIS and publishing applications. Details such as urban areas, fields, harbour walls, underwater sandbanks and even shipping may be seen.
In print, the image supports mapping up to a scale of 1:750,000 at 300dpi. For 3D graphics, a pixel size of 250 metres makes it ideal as a texture map draped over 1km
Digital Terrain data. Colouring is compatible with our global
1km Satellite Imagemap.
High-resolution images using the 250m Satellite Imagemap are available in our
Image Library.
